Triple NBA MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half following an accidental coming together with teammate Jones.

Jones stepped on the foot of the big man, who immediately collapsed to the floor clutching his leg.

The veteran player, who leads the NBA this season in boards and assists, posted 21 points and eight dimes in the contest before incurring the setback.

He is scheduled for an MRI scan on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the problem.

"Right away, Jokic knew he was hurt," said Denver coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever that suffers an injury, it's tough to see, especially somebody as talented as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"The team will adjust together. Clearly, right now, I am more concerned primarily about him personally and the disappointment of facing a situation of that nature."
