Israelis have gathered throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the talks revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are striving to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war administration of the region

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.

In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do any agreement needed for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that around 70% of Israelis desire the hostilities to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, area and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the evening falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south, health workers said.

The territory's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
