The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A new acronym emerged several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to treat a minor who has lost their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials disputes these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A competition that initially championed harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
