The $150m Men Transforming a Human Highlight Reel
The NBA campaign tips off this week, marking the first time in a decade that Australia's pair of most prominent hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
Their absence signals a changing of the guard, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as key starters for playoff aspirants, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of Australia’s highest sporting earners.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for minutes across the NBA, ranging from experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
Following lengthy discussions with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey finally signed his rookie extension worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four seasons recently. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is cheap for his role and profile as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old begins this year with a point to make.
Having been traded by Oklahoma City at the start of last season, Giddey watched as his former squad charged to the NBA championship in his absence. As the Bulls aim to make the playoffs in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will have to show his shooting and defence are starter-worthy or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels signed the same deal as Giddey recently, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Atlanta guard’s career has taken off in the city following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now praised as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, and topped the league in steals with 3.0 spg – more than one whole takeaway per match greater than the tally of second place.
Playing next to flamboyant Trae Young in Atlanta, the 22-year-old can be effective this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and keep develop his distribution and driving, Daniels could become one of the association's most well-rounded talents.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Pacers forward Furphy has burst onto the scene as a crowd favorite in the state following a succession of spectacular dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted league figure Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the mid-season dunk contest could be on the table.
Following playing just eight minutes per contest over 50 games in his rookie campaign, the former college player is in contention for a Indiana lineup that might lean towards young players following setback to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Playmaker Proctor dropped in the NBA Draft down to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls the Cavaliers selected him. The Cavs are front-runners to reach the Finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be unusual for a rookie drafted in the second round to see much playing minutes. But the Sydney product has seen time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting gives him a opportunity to make an impact.
Minutes Crunch Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned big man Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting five spot in Memphis given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the opening of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play consistent action if the team become competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is likely to be used as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In the Hornets, Josh Green’s off-season shoulder surgery has resulted in him with no return date to come back. The player still has a contract for the upcoming year, but will not want to allow his colleagues at the rebuilding Hornets an excessive head start. And a physical issue has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has been absent for important exhibition opportunities in Dallas.
Australian NBA Players Fighting for Roles
Then there are those who are unlikely to see much, if any, game action this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in the Timberwolves, but appears to be primarily a big brother ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be nurtured by Minnesota Timberwolves through their affiliate team. Fellow first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the experienced Luke Travers will be aiming to win playing time with his compatriot for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Patty Mills was planning to end his career, he answered them with a workout video shared on his social media recently, showing the 37-year-old remains sharp and determined on securing another NBA contract.
Simmons' intentions is anyone’s guess after an break in Australia, going fishing and using with a football. Even though he posted on social media recently to deny suggestions he was done, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has not yet return to the league.
