Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
