An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," said an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
