Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
